Press Information Bureau Government of India ***** RECRUITMENT AVENUES AT ZSI & BSI TO OPEN UP, SAYS JAIRAM RAMESH   Kolkata : June 24, 2009               Twenty-five thousand new scientists with required average age of 45  and 35 thousand new scintists with average age between 38 to 40 are to be recruited at the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and Botanical Survey of India (BSI) respectively by the year 2010. This was announced by the Minister of STate (I/C) for Environment & Forest, Shri Jairam Ramesh while addressing newsmen at the ZSI here today. Shri Ramesh pointed out that international exposure of scientists belonging to these two organizations have been almost nil and that the Ministry of Environment & Forests would facilitate them to attend international seminars and workshops. The minister felt gender ration in both BSI & ZSI were low and stated that among the new recruits one-third of the scientists would be women.               The minister said both these organizations have to focus on the north-east, Western Ghats and Andaman & Nicobar Islands in order of priority. He was of the opinion that ZSI and BSI required more resources -- their total Budget being Rs.30 crore each -- for which he has written to the Finance Minister, Shri Pranab Mukherjee.               Shri Ramesh announced that the government has started a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL) in which 150 books in Sanskrit, Arabic, Urdu & Persian have been put on line. By making TKDL available world-wide, bio-theft & piracy would be prevented.               Replying to queries on his ministry's action on Aila-affected Sunderbans, Shri Ramesh said that he has held discussions with the Governor of West Bengal on taking  long-term measurers to protect the ecologically-valued area of Sunderbans. some of the measures include--mangrove areas must be protected, setting up effective early-warning systems, providing livelihood security etc.               Shri Ramesh also announced that the Central Govt is in the process of finalising a tri-partite MoU involving the Central Govt, concerned State Govt and its Project Tiger area.
