Just as Israel stands out from the rest of the Middle East in its basically Western orientation, so does scholarship about Israel differ from that about the rest of the region: unlike the fairly primitive state of research elsewhere, Israel studies can match those of any Western state -- as the excellent New Encyclopedia proves. (It's "new" because it builds on a 1971 edition, The Encyclopedia of Zionism and Israel, edited by the late Raphael Patai, adding about 30 percent more materials).
The two-volume work contains major essays on such topics as Hebrew literature, the history of Israel, immigration to Israel (aliya) and U.S.-Israel relations. The allotment of space is sometimes puzzling: why devote over 7 pages to the Zionist Organization of America but just a quarter-page to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee? Does the United Nations deserve 13 pages compared to David Ben-Gurion's 3? Topics include not just the requisite individuals, institutions, places, and events, but also entries one might not expect: insurance in Israel, Zionism in India, Jewish liturgical music in Israel, and the Israel Aircraft Industries. The volumes are illustrated, mostly with historical photographs of both charm and interest.
Although filling only 2 volumes, the New Encyclopedia has about as much information as other 4-volume books (including the Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East and The Oxford Encyclopadia of the Modern Islamic World, reviewed in MEQ. Sept. 1995).

GANDHI, MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND°
GANDHI, MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND° (1869–1948), Indian political leader. Gandhi had several Jewish friends resulting from his 21-year stay in South Africa (1893–1914). This was a period of formative influence in which he formulated and first put into practice his conception of satyagraha (nonviolent resistance) and crystallized most of the elements of his ethos and lifestyle. The most intimate of his non-Indian colleagues and confidants in South Africa were Jews, notably H.S.L. (Henry) Polak andHermann *Kallenbach . However, while evincing sympathy for the Jews as the historic underdog of Western society, Gandhi was less sympathetic to the Jewish religion. Neither Polak nor Kallenbach could authentically interpret Judaism for him since they were both alienated from the Jewish religion and community. Gandhi's formative perception of Judaism derived less from his Hinduism than from the particular circumstances of his exposure, as a Hindu, to Christian influence. While he had reservations about Christianity, he at least understood it on its own terms, whereas Judaism was perceived by him through Christian-tinted glasses. Thus he regarded Jesus as "the finest flower of Judaism" and identified Judaism wholly with the Old Testament which he did not like much. This attitude was reinforced by his contact with the Calvinist Boers of South Africa in whom he saw the products of Old Testament influence.
Gandhi's distorted view of Judaism also prejudiced his perception of Zionism. Thus he insisted that Zion was not geographical but "lies in the heart." It therefore could be realized by Jews anywhere and ought not to mean "the reoccupation of Palestine." Moreover, his overriding striving for Muslim-Hindu amity in an undivided India influenced him to support the Muslim-Arab case against that of Zionism. In March 1921 he made a statement supporting the demand of the Indian Muslim Khilafat (Caliphate) movement that Muslim control be retained over Palestine. He argued on moral grounds but the partiality of his stand is evident in his dismissal of Jewish religious sentiment regarding Palestine, in contrast to his uncritical affirmation of Muslim religious sentiment. Concerned by the increasing hostility to Zionism in India, Moshe Shertok urged Kallenbach, who had meanwhile become a Zionist in South Africa, to visit India with a view to gaining Gandhi's sympathy for the Zionist cause. Kallenbach visited him in May 1937 and succeeded in making the Mahatma more sympathetic to Zionism. Gandhi permitted him to deliver a private statement to the Zionist leadership accepting, in principle, the validity of the Jewish aspiration to found a home in Palestine, but rejecting any reliance on British power, and insisting that fulfillment of Zionist goals be dependent on Arab approval. However, constrained by his solidarity with Muslim feelings in India, Gandhi never gave public expression to such private sentiments. At the same time, not wishing to harm either Jews or Arabs, Gandhi was reluctant to make public statements on the Arab-Jewish conflict. Yet, urged by Kallenbach and others to make his voice heard in the light of Nazi persecution of the Jews, he finally did so in November 1938. But in this statement he again averred that Palestine belonged to the Arabs and advised the Jews to cultivate a spiritual rather than a geographical Zion. He unreservedly condemned Hitler's wanton persecution of the Jews but recommended that the Jews of Germany observe organized satyagraha in response to Nazi atrocities and not leave Germany.
Martin Buber and Judah Magnes, both admirers of Gandhi, wrote open letters to him in response to this statement. But they remained unanswered. It is not clear whether Gandhi actually received them. However, he did publicly answer another open letter from Ḥayyim Greenberg, in which he reiterated his views and denied that they were motivated by the desire to win Muslim friendship. It would appear that the nature of Nazi treatment of the Jews lay utterly beyond his comprehension. He remained convinced that "the stoniest German heart will melt" if only the Jews would adopt "active non-violence."
After World War II, Gandhi again expressed some sympathy for the Zionist case in private conversations with the Anglo-Jewish M.P. Sidney Silverman and with his American Jewish biographer, Louis Fischer. But when publicity was given to these sentiments, he reiterated his reservations and condemned violence. His public statements thus remained consistently unsympathetic to Zionism.
As far as the Jews of India are concerned, it appears that they have had a positive view of Gandhi. According to their oral accounts, in 1931 Gandhi met with a number of*Bene Israel to discuss the possible participation of Indian Jews in the nationalist movement and suggested that they join hands with Indian nationalists in the event of their victory but not get involved in wider politics before that time, as they represented such a small minority that they should be concerned chiefly with their own safety.

India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh begins US visit
Mr Singh's trip is the first official state visit of the Obama administration |
Indian PM Manmohan Singh has begun a visit to the US for talks expected to be dominated by Afghanistan, climate change and nuclear energy cooperation.
Mr Singh has said that a victory for the Taliban in Afghanistan would be a catastrophe for South and Central Asia.
He said he was concerned about the spread of Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorism to Pakistan's heartlands.
India hopes the summit talks will see the finalisation of the civilian nuclear deal with the US.
During his visit - the first official state visit of the Obama administration - Mr Singh will hold meetings with business leaders and foreign policy scholars.
He will meet US President Barack Obama on Tuesday.
"It is very important that both the US and the global community stay engaged in Afghanistan," Mr Singh told The Washington Post newspaper and Newsweek magazine ahead of his arrival Sunday.
Mr Singh urged the Obama administration to pressure Pakistan to crack down on Islamic militants in the country.
'Nothing to fear'
"We have been the victims of Pakistan-aided, abetted and inspired terrorism for nearly 25 years. We would like the United States to use all its influence with Pakistan to desist from that path," Mr Singh said in the interview.
"Pakistan has nothing to fear from India. It's a tragedy that Pakistan has come to the point of using terror as an instrument of state policy," he said.
Mr Singh expressed doubts over whether Pakistan and the US had similar objectives in Afghanistan.
"I don't see Pakistan wholeheartedly in support of action against the Taliban in Afghanistan. They of course are taking action against the Taliban, but only when it threatens the supremacy of the army," he said.
In a separate interview, Mr Singh also said that he hoped that the Obama administration would complete the finalisation of the deal on nuclear energy which Delhi struck with former President Bush.
India and the US have been forging closer defence and economic ties recently.
Last year they signed a civilian nuclear co-operation accord to end 34 years of US sanctions.
India gains access to US civilian nuclear technology and fuel in return for inspections of its civilian, but not military, nuclear facilities.

Angry Liberhan says he did not leak Ayodhya report!Publication of purported key conclusions of the Liberhan Commission probing the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 set off a political storm today with the BJP accusing the Government of a "planned leak" to divide the Opposition. The Congress hit back saying the whole nation know that the BJP had shed "crocodile tears" after its senior functionaries had watched people causing destruction and mayhem.

Top BJP leaders including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi have reportedly been indicted by a Commission of Inquiry which was set up 17 years ago to probe the demolition of Babri Masjid. A newspaper report about the findings of the Commission, headed by Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan, triggered an uproar in Parliament with both the Houses adjourned after BJP members attacked the government over the "leakage".
The voluminous report, which was submitted to the government about five months ago, is believed to have called the BJP leaders "pseudo-moderates" holding that Advani and Vajpayee cannot be absolved of their responsibility in the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. The Commission is understood to have said that Vajpayee, Advani and Joshi could have been used by the Sangh Parivar as publicly acceptable faces of the movement and were still party to all decisions.
It said none of them had the capacity to defy the orders of the RSS without damaging their political future and called them tools in the hands of the RSS. The Commission is not not believed to have criticised the late Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao saying as per Constitution the Union Government can act only after it receives the recommendations of the state Governor. My Film Director Friend RAJOV Kumar Called me on my Cell Phone last evening while I was in Princep Ghat down train on way to my Work Place inBBD Bagh. Meena Bhabhi also talked. The Couple laughed Violently while I told them that Sabiita feels Uneasy with the Weather cahnge,. In Fact Sabita has bought to Saris for Meenaji and she has to exchange one. I adviced them to talk to Sabita on her cell phone.
Meena Bhabhi and the Two Kids, Golu and Prithu were away in Pilibhit with Rajiv`s parents during Diwali Vacations. Rajiv was scheduled to go. But now they informed that Rajiv just missed the train and as rajiv told he was weepin at home alone.
Meanwhile, Dr Batrohi from Nainital informed me about the Film Festival in November in Nainital and scheduled screening of our Film VASIYAT. I told my inability to join the party and hoped Rajiv to join. Apparently, Rajiv also missed. But he informed that not VIRASAT,but his Docu, No Body`s People in No Body`s Land was screened as nainital has already seen VASIYAT.
Rajiv was in Talking Mood and just after inquiring whetehr the train was Crowdy , he questioned like an Interviewer. As for a Disclaimer he informed that he and our dearest friend joshy Joseph stand with us in Aboriginal Indigenous movement and informed that for a Busy December Schedule they would not be able to join us in Jiapur National Convention. Rajiv`s Brother who I knew in Nainital and me and Rajiv had to visit his Scholl , Ghorakhal Sainik School,i working in Udaipur and he would join me there.
In Fact, I talked to Rajaram Bhadu, Prominent Poet in Rajasthan last day as I got the Cell phone number from Lokmat Diwali Special Issue which published us together. I do not write in Hindi these days and had refiused for the dailies as the editors called me. But it seems the Lokamat Feature Editor picked up anUnpublished writeup, METRO ME BADALTE Mahanagar, in which I have takenup the Changing Scenerio and the FUTURE CITIES in Shining Sensex India, and published it. You may read it in Lokmat Diwali Issue provided you feel inerested to read me in Hindi once again.
I would be free on 31st December night and would have First and Second December Free. My friends plan to arrange some Sit Together events during that time.
Rajiv was ANXIOUS to know the difference between Jews and ZIONISM and enquired about the Old Testament relation to Jews. I had to talk on Christianity, Islam and Zionism as well as Jews rooted in Middle East and had to deal with Palestine Problem. I told Rajiv that the Middle East Tribals are as DIVIDED as we happen to be in India.Zionism is as the DITTO ENEMY to Jews as the Brahamins to SC, ST , OBC and Minority Communities enslaved in India. I adviced him to read the ALAN Hart Classic, ZIONISM is the Greatest Enemy of JEWS. We discussed Charlesdarwin and his sacred cause and landed in the Origin of Apartheid andits Philosophical and Scientific Origin. We also discused the Americas, Europe and specilly Russia dominated by Zionists after the demise of USSR. I had to EXPLAIN how India Ruling Dynasty is nothing but Zionsists and how the Zionists plan to MODIFY MIZORAM in a Second Zionist State after ISRAEL! We discussed the ZIONSTS within and Outside, Free Market Democracy and Market Dominating Communities, CivilSociety and Inteligentsia.
BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the "selective leaks" of the Commission''s report to the media were politically motivated and had come at a time when the Opposition was united against the government over issues like price rise and sugarcane prices. Rejecting the BJP charge, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that for nearly two decades, the nation as a whole generally knew what had happened and how senior functionaries of a political party witnessed the destruction of the Babri Masjid and then shed "crocodile tears".
Top BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and other functionaries are believed to have been indicted in the report which is said to have concluded that the demolition was meticulously planned. The report of Justice M S Liberhan, who submitted his findings to the government on June 30 this year after an inquiry spanning nearly 17 years, is due to be placed in Parliament before the winter session ends next month.
'Get lost!' This was M.S. Liberhan's outburst when confronted by journalists over his leaked report into the Babri mosque razing published Monday. The retired Supreme Court judge, whose report on the December 1992 demolition has created a furore in parliament, said he had not leaked the report to anyone.
An angry Liberhan yelled at the media outside his house in Chandigarh's upscale Sector 9 residence, even telling them to 'get lost'.
Ambushed while taking a walk, Liberhan took exception to a journalist asking him if he had perhaps leaked the report to the Indian Express daily that published a condensed version of his findings into the 1992 mosque demolition.
'I am not that kind of a characterless person that I should leak the report. I have submitted the report to the government,' said a visibly annoyed Liberhan, a former chief justice of the Andhra Pradesh high court, who took nearly 17 years to compile the report on the mosque demolition in Ayodhya and submitted it June this year.
'It is for you (media) to go and find out (who leaked the report). I am not that kind of accessible person to the media,' he said, adding he was 'very sad' at the way the media was treating him before walking back into his home in a huff.
Home Minister P. Chidambaran told Lok Sabha Monday morning that there was only one copy of the Liberhan Commission report and that was 'in safe custody'.
It took 17 years and 48 extensions for the Liberhan Commission probing the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya to submit its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh June this year.
One of the country's longest running inquiry commissions, which has cost the government nearly Rs.7 crore (Rs.70 million), the Liberhan Commission was set up to probe the sequence of events leading to the razing of the Babri mosque by Hindu mobs on Dec 6, 1992.
The report -- in four volumes with an extensive set of annexures -- will be placed in both houses of parliament along with the Action Taken Report (ATR) in the ongoing winter session, Chidambaram said in the Lok Sabha.
During the entire tenure, the one-man probe has been dogged by procedural delays, non-cooperation from key witnesses and even constant transfers of staff during the early days of the commission's functioning.
Uma Bharti defends names of BJP leaders in Babri Masjid demolition case
Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and chief of Bhartiya Janshakti Party, Uma Bharti, on Monday defended leaders of the BJP whose names have featured in a leaked report of the judicial commission that probed demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992.A section of the media on Monday reported that the Justice Liberhan Commission has named former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapayee along with senior BJP leaders L.K.Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi as being responsible for spearheading the Karseva movement to demolish the mosque.
Addressing the media persons in Bhopal, Bharti questioned the integrity of the report and said: "Since I have not seen the entire report, I can't comment on it. However, if actually the name of Atal Behari is mentioned in this report, it is a question mark on the integrity of report itself."
She further suspected that the Union Government has deliberately leaked the report to malign the top leaders of the BJP.
"Present Government being of UPA (United Progressive Alliance, led by the Congress party) and sources of Home Ministry leaking the report suggests that the ruling government wants to malign the image of some leaders," Bharti said.
The report quoting the commission's report said the entire build-up to the demolition was meticulously planned and there was reportedly nothing to show that these leaders were either unaware of what was going on or were innocent bystanders to any wrongdoing.
The Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan Commission was set up by the then P.V.Narasimha Rao Government on December 16, 1992.
After 17 years and 42 extensions the commission submitted its report on June 30 this year.
The Union Home Ministry is reportedly giving final touches to the Action Taken Report (ATR). The ATR is likely to be placed before Parliament alongwith the Liberhan Commission's report in the current session.
Justice Liberhan has declined to comment on the news report, saying the Commission's report is with the Government.Cong playing dirty politics on Babri issue, alleges BJP
Accusing the Congress of playing "dirty politics", the BJP today demanded suspension of Question Hour in both Houses of Parliament and a debate on the "selective leaks" on Liberhan Commission report on Babri Masjid demolition. Leader of Opposition L K Advani submitted a notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar while Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley gave a notice to Chairman Hamid Ansari in this regard, senior party leader Sushma Swaraj said.
"We demand the suspension of Question Hour in both Houses and a debate on the selective leaks on Liberhan Commission report. We have been demanding that since the report has been submitted, it should be tabled in Parliament at the earliest," Swaraj told reporters here.
The move comes against the backdrop of a media report claiming that former prime minister A B Vajpayee, Advani and BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi were indicted by the Liberhan Commission which probed the Babri Masjid demolition on December 6, 1992. Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar alleged that the ruling Congress was playing "dirty politics".
"The government is duty-bound to table the full report along with the Action Taken Report in Lok Sabha. But instead of doing it, the government is resorting to politics of selective leaks," he alleged.

Zionism, exterminism, and the Times of India
A Letter to the Editor
Friday 9 January 2009, by Dilip Simeon
he Editor, The Times of India
Sir,
On January 8, 2009, you published the result of a poll in answer to your question "Should India follow Israel's lead in its own war against terror?" The answer, predictably, was 84% in favour. I submit that this was a disingeneous way of conducting Israeli propaganda, a means of misleading the public and a violation of journalistic norms of fairness. Your newspaper prides itself on educating your readership. You have the right to publicise your views on current affairs, but do you not recognise that that there may be views at variance with your own? And that they need an airing in a responsible newspaper? Are you not aware that the Israel-Palestine conflict has aspects to it that may not be wished away by catch-phrases such as "war against terror"?
Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were not anti-Israel, but had a deep sympathy with the Palestinian refugees struggle for a homeland. Indian policy towards the Middle East was informed by knowledge of the gross injustice manifested in the evacuation of seven lakh Christian and Muslim Arabs from their homes and villages in Palestine in 1948, an evacuation enforced by massacres. Since then there have been five major wars, and several well-documented atrocities against Palestinian refugees - I need only refer to the Sabra and Chatila massacres of September 1982, where between 2000 to 3000 Palestinian refugees were killed by a pro-Israeli militia. Ariel Sharon, the Israeli defence minister was found responsible for this and had to resign. Had Europeans been the targets of such an atrocity would the 'civilised' West permitted the man responsible to ascend to the position of Prime MInister?
Yes, Hamas has an extremist ideology. So does Israel, which has illegally occupied and settled the West Bank with over 2 lakh Jewish settlers, and subjected the Palestinian population to racist discrimination. There is ample material to bear this out, some of it written by democratic-minded Jews, including Israeli citizens. Israel is the only country in the world that believes in expanding its own recognised frontiers by sheer force, and with utter contempt for UN resoutions. It is Israel that breached the current truce, in order to launch its latest massacre. It is the Palestinian refugees who are the victims of terror.
The Israel-Palestine conflict is a dangerous flashpoint and needs serious discussion. But the editors of the Times of India refuse to allow it. By implicitly aligning Indian public opinion with the latest Israeli outrage you are reneging on your responsibility as an organ of public information. You are also endangering the norms of Indian democracy by suggesting that India emulate Israel in its brutal and racist attitude towards innocent civilians. Please avoid such facile and tendentious 'polls' as the one reported on January 8, and allow a real debate on this burning issue.
yours,
Dilip Simeon

Israel and India, Zionism and Hindutva
Monday 9 November 2009 by Achin Vanaik
It was after the Cold War that the Indian establishment's attitude to Palestine could not escape the impact of the overall lurch rightwards of the centre of gravity of the Indian polity. At home this has meant much greater accommodation towards— and acceptance of— Hindutva, which applauds Zionism.
Neither the Indian government, the 'foreign policy establishment', the strategic elite, the mainstream media, nor that broader category loosely termed as the Indian middle class are seriously bothered by the plight of the Palestinians, or at all interested in there being a truly just settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict.
That Israel is a Jewish state, it says, should be welcomed and India should recognize that it is basically a Hindu nation requiring a representative Hindu state. Common to both Hindutva and Zionism is the belief that true democracy is majoritarian and must above all protect Hindus/Hinduism and Jews/Judaism respectively. It cannot and must not, therefore, assign full citizenship rights to other ethnic/religious groupings such as Muslims and Christians in India (Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are subsumed under the label of Hindu since they are faiths originating in a Hindu India) or to the Palestinians or "Israeli Arabs" as they are called in Israel.
The Hindutva are represented above all by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or National Volunteer Corps, comprising an estimated 2 million-cadre force organized in some 60,000 branches throughout the country. It also has its political-electoral wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as well as a host of other organizational offshoots. The RSS-BJP posit as their hostile and dangerous 'other' the Muslims, while for Israel it is the Palestinians, mostly Muslim but also Christian. Hindutva thus sees an emotional-ideological affinity between itself and Zionism.
Complementing this presumed cultural affinity between Hindutva and Zionism are the new post-Cold War era strategic compulsions and realignments. Whether the BJP or the Congress Party reigns at the centre— independently or in a coalition— both are committed to deepening the India-Israel-US alliance. After the 2009 Indian elections, the current Congress-led ruling coalition will continue on this path.
Israel is now the second largest supplier of military equipment to India (after Russia, which might well be permanently overtaken in due course by both Israel and the US) and India is now Israel's biggest arms purchaser. In New Delhi, Israel is seen as a key conduit for influencing the US government, which while seeking to consolidate its strategic partnership with India also— to the irritation of India— feels the need to sustain its strategic ties with Pakistan.
In the US much of the politically active Indian diaspora believes that it must emulate and work with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) if it is to establish a powerful and organized lobby in the elite decision-making circles that count in Washington. High-level representatives of both the BJP and the Congress Party have thus made it a point to visit Tel Aviv and to meet AIPAC leaders in the US. In addition, India and Israel are now collaborating ever more closely on anti-terrorism.
India makes occasional noises about Palestinian suffering along with mildly worded criticisms about Israel, but Tel Aviv knows these are pro-forma objections that mean little to nothing. With regard to the Palestinian struggle for justice, India— like the EU— will do two things: it will throw money to Palestinian agencies and pay lip service to its cause. Nothing more. The predominating view in India is, 'why should India be more pro-Palestinian than the Arab governments whom subordinate that cause to their own interests?'
So why should India not pursue its perceived national interests, which geopolitically means forging a strategic link with Israel and the US? Some argue that the traditionally non-aligned Indian national interest lay elsewhere— and that there are similarities between the plight of the Palestinians and another long-suffering people.
To wit, connect the Dalit upsurge in India to the solidarity movement for Palestine. Racism must be understood in broader terms as encompassing various forms of exclusionist ideologies founded not just on biologically or physically determined markers, but also on cultural ones. Thus cultural identity markers, when used for the purposes of institutionalized discrimination, are also to be seen as forms of racist injustice. Both casteism and Zionism come into this category of culturally based discriminations. You do not have to be a Palestinian to empathize with the Palestinian cause. Palestinians are fighting for much more than just their national liberation; they are fighting for progressives everywhere.

Driving Zionist Agenda: Corrupt Feudal Politicians Push Pakistan To The Edge
A glimpse into how corrupt feudal "Pakistani democracy" works – Fozia Wahab thrashed by Mubasher Lucman
Pushing Pak Military To Revolt?
The Kerry-Lugar-Berman Big Bribe will go into the usual pockets. In return, the 'democratic' Pakistani government is permitting Washington to secretly create a small mercenary army inside Pakistan. Arrogant US diplomats and complicit politicians in government are pushing the Pakistani military to the point of revolt.
By Eric S. Margolis
Thursday, 22 October 2009.
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Official Washington watches in mounting alarm and confusion as Pakistan spins out of control.
The US-led war in Afghanistan has now poured over into Pakistan, bringing that nation of 167 million close to civil war.
Bombings and shootings are rocking Pakistan's northwest regions, including a brazen attack on army HQ in Rawalpindi and repeated bombings of Lahore and Peshawar. Pakistan's army has launched a major offensive against rebellious Pashtun tribes in South Waziristan.
Meanwhile, the weak, deeply unpopular government of Asif Zardari that was engineered into power by the US faces an increasingly rancorous confrontation with its own military. Like the proverbial bull in the china shop, the Obama administration and US Congress chose this explosive time to try to impose yet another layer of American control over Pakistan – just as Nobel peace prize winner Barack Obama appears likely to send thousands more US troops to Afghanistan.
Tragically, US policy in the Muslim world continues to be driven by imperial arrogance, profound ignorance, and special interest groups. The current Kerry-Lugar-Berman bill approved by Congress and signed by Obama is ham-fisted dollar diplomacy at its worst.
Pakistan, bankrupted by corruption and feudal landlords, is being offered US$7.5 billion over five years. Washington claims there are no strings attached. Except, of course, that the US wants to build a mammoth new embassy for 1,000 personnel in Islamabad, the second largest after its giant fortress-embassy in Baghdad. New diplomatic personnel are needed, claims Washington, to monitor the US$7.5 billion in aid. So a small army of US mercenaries is being brought in to protect US "interests". New US military bases will open. Most of the billions in new aid will go right into the pockets of the pro-western ruling establishment, about 1% of the population. Washington has been also demanding veto power over promotions in Pakistan's armed forces and intelligence agency, ISI. This crude attempt to take control of Pakistan's proud, 617,000-man military and intelligence service has enraged its armed forces. It's all part of Washington's "Afpak" strategy to clamp tighter control over restive Pakistan and make use its armed forces and intelligence agents in Afghanistan. The other key US objective is seizing control of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, the cornerstone of its national defence against much more powerful India. Welcome, Pakistan, to the American Raj. However, 90% of Pakistanis oppose the US-led war in Afghanistan, and see Taliban and its allies as national resistance to western occupation. Alarmingly, violent attacks on Pakistan's government are coming not only from once autonomous Pashtun tribes (wrongly called "Taliban") in Northwest Frontier Province, but, increasingly, in the biggest province, Punjab. Recently, the US Ambassador in Islamabad, in a fit of imperial arrogance, actually called for air attacks on Pashtun leaders in Quetta, capital of Pakistan's restive Baluchistan province. Washington does not even bother to ask the Islamabad government's permission to launch air attacks inside Pakistan, only informing it afterwards.
The Kerry-Lugar-Berman Big Bribe comes as many irate Pakistanis accuse President Asif Ali Zardari's government of being American hirelings. Zardari, widower of Benazir Bhutto, has been dogged for decades by corruption charges. Washington seems unaware of the fury its crude, counter-productive policies have whipped up in Pakistan. The Obama administration listens to Washington-based pro-Israel neo-conservatives, military hawks, and "experts" who tell it what it wants to hear, not the facts. Pakistan's military, the nation's premier institution, is being pushed to the point of revolt. Against the backdrop of bombings and shootings come rumours the heads of Pakistan's armed forces and intelligence may be replaced. Pakistanis are calling for the removal of the Zardari regime's strongman, Interior Minister Rehman Malik. The possibility of a military coup against the Zardari regime grows. But Pakistan is dependent on US money, and fears India. Can its generals afford to break with patron Washington?

Russia has now turned into a "criminal state", according to the man who was once its leading foreign investor.
Bill Browder of Hermitage Capital was reacting to the news that his lawyer had died in prison in Russia after being held for a year without charge.
He told the BBC that his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, had effectively been "held hostage and they killed their hostage."
Through Hermitage Capital Bill Browder campaigned against corruption at some of Russia's largest companies.
Russian officials say they are investigating Mr Magnitsky's death.
He was their hostage and they killed their hostage by denying him medical attention Bill Browder, Hermitage Capital |
In 2005 Mr Browder was banned from Russia as a threat to national security, after allegations that his firms evaded tax, but Mr Browder says his company was targeted by criminals trying to seize millions of pounds worth of his assets.
Mr Browder says he was punished for being a threat to corrupt politicians and bureaucrats.
Since then, a number of Mr Browder's associates in Russia - as well as lawyers acting for his company - have been detained, beaten or robbed.
Before the accusations of tax evasion were raised, for many years Mr Browder had been one of the most outspoken defenders of the Russian government and its then-president Vladimir Putin.
'False confession'
According to Mr Browder, Sergei Magnitsky developed stomach and pancreas problems in prison which were diagnosed by a prison physician. He claims Mr Magnitsky was then moved to a new prison and then deprived of medical treatment.
Sergei Magnitsky died in prison |
"They basically said to him if you sign the following false confessions then we'll give you medical treatment - otherwise we wont," claims Mr Browder.
Mr Magnitsky apparently wrote numerous complaints to the court, prosecutors and the prison authorities requesting medical treatment. Mr Browder claims that Mr Magnistky's pleas were first ignored and then denied.
Mr Browder believes that Mr Magnitsky's death is a direct result of tax evasion allegations against him.
"They're trying to come up with any kind of charges they can against me and they were using him as their tool. He was their hostage and they killed their hostage by denying him medical attention, " he says.
Sergei Magnitsky was one of the lawyers hired by Mr Browder to investigate whether fraud had been committed against his firms.
Mr Browder claims that when the police raided his office they took away corporate documents which they then used to steal his companies.
We're not going to let it rest until the people responsible for the death face justice Bill Browder, Hermitage Capital |
"Sergei Magnitsky was one of the lawyers who discovered the whole crime, figured out who was responsible and then testified against the police officers and after he testified against the police officers the very same police officers had him arrested on spurious charges."
The circumstances surrounding Mr Magnitsky's death has caused Bill Browder to question his attitude to Russia under Putin.
'Criminal state'
"When Putin first showed up and said he was going to tame the oligarchs I was the biggest fan of that particular concept. Then I realised that what he meant by taming the oligarchs was by sticking law enforcement people in their place," he says.
"Now you have a bunch of law enforcement people who are essentially organised criminals with unlimited power to ruin lives take property and do whatever they like and that's far worse than I have ever seen in Russia before. Russia is essentially a criminal state now."
Vladimir Putin won the 2000 Russian presidential election |
Mr Browder says he is going to do all he can to get justice for Sergei Magnitsky.
"We're not going to let it rest until the people responsible for the death face justice," he said.
Responding to Mr Magnitsky's death, Russian Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov said he needed more evidence that the prisoner did not receive adequate medical care.
"I would be grateful to human rights activists for providing specific information. In every case where there are doubts that assistance was timely and of good quality, there has to be a probe".
The investigative committee for the Prosecutor's office said they were conducting a full investigation in the death.
"As of now, we don't see a justification for starting a criminal case," said Moscow Investigative Committee chief, Anatoly Bagmet.

Zionism, the United States, and Hegemony in the Middle East
Zionism, Militarism, and the Decline of US Power
By James Petras
Paperback: 192 pages
(Clarity Press, 2008)
ISBN-10: 0-932863-60-4
ISBN-13: 978-0-932863-60-7
Professor James Petras has written another book — Zionism, Militarism, and the Decline of US Power — probing deeper into what he contends is a Zionist Power Configuration (ZPC) that has infiltrated and largely usurped US foreign policy even using the US military for its ends in the Middle East. Petras fills his book with lots of evidence backed by sound rationales.
Petras's thesis is that Israel — and not Big Oil — was behind the push to invade and occupy Iraq. That has already happened. What concerns Petras now is the push by the ZPC to have the United States again breach international law and launch an attack against Iran.
Petras reasons that the ZPC's purpose is to incorporate Palestine and consolidate its hegemony in the Middle East. Strategically, gaining and holding sway over the planet's preeminent military power has been a major plank toward this goal.
The professor provides numerous examples of the sway the ZPC wields and how it wields it: through its propaganda and media arms (Petras cites how, pre-"war," the Lobby produced about 8,800 pro-Iraq attack pieces which were circulated to major Anglo-American media versus zero pro-Iraq attack pieces published from Big Oil spokespeople); through its academic acolytes; through involving US soldiers to fight its wars (Petras charges that the Israel Firsters "ridicule the US military precisely to instigate them to prosecute wars and thereby avoid the loss of Israeli-Jewish lives"); through the relative silence of dissenting voices, including dissenting Jewish voices in mass media; through members of the US Congress beholden through acceptance of campaign contributions form the Lobby.
Campaign contributions turn out, actually, to be an investment. Through seeding the US Congress, Israel has become the prime beneficiary of US "aid," even though Israel is a relatively well-to-do state, especially compared to many of its neighbors. Petras wavers on what the "US annual 'tribute to Israel'" is. On page 68, he cites a figure of $6 billion a year; on page 68 he states $3 billion a year; on page 156, it is $2.4 billion a year; and on page 164 it is "well over $3 billion" a year. This irritation contributes to unevenness in Petras's account.
Exacerbating this irritation is an uneven patchwork of endnotes. Sometimes key points are in the endnotes, and sometimes key points are not in the endnotes. For example, he writes that Big Oil is anxious and fearful about an Israeli-instigated warmongering destabilizing the Middle East citing a source for this claim (p. 32). On page 92 he claims electoral chicanery without citation. Whether the claims are true or not is beside the point, which is that the reader is hindered from checking the professor's sources. And when there are endnotes, many convey scanty information (e.g., no author, no title, no page) that forces a reader to spend inordinate time tracking down a citation.
Petras, however, deserves kudos for taking on the Lobby which resorts to disreputable tactics to try and silence its critics. Petras does not shirk from identifying how he perceives the threat from the ZPC: "The lesson is clear: the rise of Judeo-fascism represents a clear and present danger to our democratic freedoms in the United States."
The ZPC is ruthless says Petras, who observes that Israel reneges on obligations as an occupier in Palestine and engages in "meat-grinder genocidal policies in Gaza." And yet, it has vulnerabilities, such as the "repeated failures and incredible stupidity of the Israeli intelligence agencies."
The ZPC control apparatus is necessarily twined with the corporate media. "State provocations," writes Petras, "require uniform mass media complicity in the lead-up to open warfare."
With a massive media blitz and compliant government, Israel recruits US soldiers to fight its wars. The US, on the other hand, tries to get its victims to fight against their fellow countryfolk. This is a dubious strategy reasons Petras, as Iraqis fighters under occupation "recruited on basis of hunger and unemployment (caused by US war) are unreliable soldiers."
This, according to Petras, is a losing tactic: "US colonization of Iraq is a blatant denial of the conditions necessary for reconciliation."
Just how losing a strategy it is to run a militaristic economy is evidenced by the massive capitalistic expansion of non-belligerent China. In fact, the US is becoming less competitive and falling into an increasingly dire economic situation
Petras describes a schism among Jewry. He notes that "most Jewish Americans differ from the leaders of the major American Jewish organizations" … but that "they have not or do not challenge" this leadership. Antiwar sentiment among Jewish Americans, finds Petras, is quite vague.
He writes that "both the progressive majority of Jews and the reactionary minority … have a fundamental point of agreement and convergence: support for and identity with Israel and its anti-Arab prejudices, its expansion, and the dispossession of Palestine [sic]."
Given that the peace movement has gone AWOL, this bodes ill for the peoples of the Middle East. Here again, Petras holds the ZPC responsible since he charges that it has also infiltrated the antiwar movement and split it, rendering it anemic.
Petras notes that everywhere he visits around the globe people from all walks ask him why American citizens tolerate the killing done by the US government/military. This is a good question, but another question is unasked by Petras. Why do these citizens not demand the same answers from their complicit governments which, even when they do not contribute fighters to a so-called Coalition of the Willing, remain silent to the great criminal breaches of international law and the abandonment of morality?
That is why Petras's thesis in Zionism, Militarism, and the Decline of US Power is important: innocent people are dying for wicked reasons.

what's problematic about petras' analysis is his lack of placing israel in the proper context of US hegemonic interests. yes, the zionist lobby in america is messed up, but to believe that they ultimately control the US's military agenda is simply delusional. the US supports israel because it's of strategic interest to do so (see chomsky's "fateful triangle" for more on this). i sense a very strong anti-semitic subtext to this analysis, especially when petras says things like "the rise of Judeo-fascism represents a clear and present danger to our democratic freedoms in the United States". what about all the christian zionists who support US aid to israel? what democratic freedoms? america was an imperialist war-mongering power before it started supporting funding israel in the 60's, and continues to do so because that's what's in the interest of rich white americans, only a small percentage of which are jewish. the tail does not wag the dog.

… let's get real here. amerikan foreign policy was murderous and consistent long before there was a zionazi lobby. was the lobby in on the genocide of the indigenous peoples, the slave trade, the phillipines, korea, vietnam, etc.??? this seems nothing more than another version of amerikan exceptionalism, we wouldn't be doing these nasty things if it weren't for the Israelies… HAH! the zionazi pitbulls would blow away in the wind if it wasn't for our continual support, and our support is predicated on the imperial interests of the elites here being served by our loyal(?) client, not the other way around.

the constitution was written, i believe, by british people. wasn't each also a plutocrat? was there any people w. judaic faith ('jews') among them?
have any of the 'jews' participated in adding 'emendments' of and ammendments to the constitution? looks like none?
by the time khazaro-europeans arrived in US, US had already slaughtered/herded most indigenes and waged ab 100 wars.
and all wars r based on prediction, perception, lies, half truths, wishes, hatred, greed, fear, illusion of grandeur, delusions, etc.
and 'jews' were only marginaly involved in US affairs until, let's say, 1950?
if that is correct, how cld have an impoverished, tiny land hijacked US governance in just 50 yrs?
suppose 'jews' did? which means they had help? no group of people can take a grip on fbi, cia, pentagon, WH, congress, senate, police w.o. conspiratorial help from the uncle (2-10mn plutos).
the conspirators, we assume, cldn't have been hobos, housewife (no injury intended), indigenes, workers ( black/ white/hisp'c).
or, am i mistaken?
israel cld have never beeen established w.o. help of the judeo-christian alliance.
which included also communist countries. zionists, 'jewish' ones, were extremely weak military-economically in '40 to establish anything in palestine.
but they were by far more powerful diplomatically than semites. as is the case now?
or, is now israel supported by euro-amers even more than ever? and some people evaluate it as israel hijacking all the nato countries and commands them to things?
well, anything is possible! thnx -

Unfortunately bozh rhetorical questions does more to obscure rather than to shine a light on the reality of the current power alignments and influences. Zionism while closely associated with Jews and Israel is not an ideology limited to Jews. Obama and Biden are clearly Zionists but they have been heavily influenced by how the power of Zionism has infiltrated and corrupts institutions of power.
What is problematic as Petras points out that since Zionism is closely associated to Jews that Jews themselves must be on the forefront to confront Zionism. It is as Kim points out in his review of Petras ambivalence and vagueness by Jews towards Zionism as well as the labeling of critics of Zionism as "antisemitic" and "self-hating Jews" that has allowed it to flourish especially in the U.S.
thnx

The U.S. Constitution is based on the Iroquois Confederacy's Great Law of Peace? I had a good laugh about that.
The U.S. is one of the biggest warmongers the world has ever seen yet its hallowed Constitution (the one that George Bush has ignored for eight years) is connected to some Great Law of Peace.
There's quite a lot of irony there but there'll be few Americans who'll get it!

deadbeat,
regarding my questions or anyone else's. i say i find nothing wrong w. questions.
in fact, the bigger the obnubilator, the fewer question she asks. or as s'mone had said, He/she has all the answers and none of the questions.
as for Jews, i call these people a melange or 'jews'. i see nothing semitic ab liebermna, chomsky, rabin, peres, et al.
in fact, most of these 'jews' r more antisemitic than any other folk.
as for who's zionist, i say all imperialists r zionistic.
it is then natch to conclude that certain ethnic's zionism is conflated w. italian, russian, amer, canadian, and so on, zionism.
i see little or no diff btw 'jewish' Z and amer Z or btw amer imperialism and 'jewish' one, thnx -

Dear Mr. Petras,
There are 800 million Hindus in India tonight who love to hear about how Muslims are persecuted by "Zionists".
And to be honest, I am looking forward to a complete withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. I want to see the good people of Iraq enjoy each others company without any "Imperialist" intervention.
It's going to be better than WWF wrestling.

"HOW MUSLIMS ARE PERSECUTED BY 'ZIONISTS' " ?
You must educate youself to know how zionism, worse than fascism, has found its way to India to mobolize the indian fascists on their side because they have natural affinity towards one another. Since the 1990's the growth of the Hindu extremist movement has brought oppression for India's Muslims, India's Christians, as well as India's oppressed castes and Dalits.
This transformation has been facilitated by BJP, The Bharatiya Janata Party founded in 1980, to recast India from the anti-colonical pro-thier world nation, to Hindu 'nation', under US and Israeili Zionist influence adopting neolibral market economy and has anti Palestinian stand. This transformation is against Gandhi who recognized the actions of the Zionists in the 1940s as TERRORISM. Zionism works closely with Hindutva, an racist ideology is supported by BJP, a word coined in 1923 where advocating Hinu nationalism against minorities to buy their submission using terrorism and racism. Thus, the zionism's policy towards Palestinians and Mulims are supported by BJP. With the coming to power of the BJP in 1999, India's independence has been compromised by influence of zionism and imperialism. BJP has embraced Israel and turned against Palestinians and other oppressive minority groups in India to establish India as 'nation of Hindu' like the European settlers try to establish a 'Jewish state' in the the heart of Arab land against the indigenous population, Palestinians, with complete cooperation of western capitals including Britain, France, Germani and the US. In India like in occupied Palestine MUSLIMS are targeted. India has had unambiguous support for the Palestinian people for decades and voted against the partition of Palestine in 1948. No country in the region voted for the Partition of Palestine including China, Greece, a western country and Christian, majority of African and Asian countries Iran included. India recognized Israel in 1950.
After India's recognition of Israel, the Jewish Agency established an office in Mumbai to send Iraq, Afghan and European Jews to occupied Palestine. During this period over 25,000 Indian Jews, mostly from Maharashtra and some of the Kerala, immigrated to occupied land. In February 1992 Israel opened its embassy in New Delhi and in 1992 India opened its embassy in Tel-Aviv where cooperation and influence of Zionists who are working against minorities mainly, Muslims sharply increased. Since 1992 India is implimenting Israelis' expreiences dealing with Palestinians uprising against aparthied state and its oppressive measures – in Kashmir and other places to CRUSH any struggle against Hindu extremists in EXCHANGE for the turning down of India's backing of the Palestine cause and anti colonial stance.
