Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino

Ecuador says Iran is a major partner for the South American country in different fields as the two sides call for a promotion of bilateral ties.

"Iran is one of Ecuador's most strategic partners in political and economic fields and we would like all bilateral agreements and joint projects become operational," Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said on Thursday.

Patino was meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Salehi, on the sidelines of the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) ministerial conference in Bali, Indonesia.

He hailed Iran's upcoming presidency of the 118-member NAM and highlighted his country's willingness to further its cooperation within the movement.

Patino also called for measure to help expand the movement's role in regional and international developments.

Salehi, for his turn, emphasized Iran's determination to boost ties with Latin American nations in the fields of economy, trade, industry and agriculture.

Salehi also pointed out that the recent developments in the region and at the international level necessitates that two countries consciously and via joint negotiations adopt an appropriate stance toward the world powers' unfair policies, dual standards and discrimination, and preserve common interests.
