Geelani, Umar, Malik under house arrest

Srinagar, May 27: Authorities on Friday placed senior separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik under house arrest.
The Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was scheduled to address a public rally at Hazratbal here, remained under house arrest for the third consecutive day today.
"The state government foiled our public rally by keeping Geelani sahib under house arrest. He has been kept under house detention since Wednesday evening," spokesman of the amalgam, Ayaz Akbar, told Greater Kashmir.
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik were also placed under house detention this morning.
A spokesman of the Hurriyat (M) said that police cordoned off Mirwaiz's Nageen residence this morning and informed him that he cannot venture out.
"All other leaders including Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Zaffar Akbar Bhat and Shahid-ul-Islam were also placed under house arrest," he said.
He further said that scores of the activists of the conglomerate were also detained by police during raids in downtown area of Srinagar.
A JKLF spokesman, condemning the government action, said a large contingent of police this morning laid siege around Malik's residence to put him under house arrest.
"Malik was scheduled to address a public rally, but it was cancelled after he was placed under house arrest. This reflects that dictatorial curbs are being imposed on democracy, justice and peaceful struggle. It is being done to create graveyard-like silence in Kashmir," he said.
The police also detained Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Ahmed Shah last night in Thatri area of Jammu.
A JKLF (R) Spokesman said police arrested its senior vice-chairman Javaid Ahmad Mir and Muhammad Shafi Dar, younger brother of Front chairman Farooq Ahmad Dar, last night and lodged them in Mahraj Gunj and Shaheed Gunj police stations respectively.
