Geelani calls for strike on March 12

'Govt Trying To Disturb Peace By Arrests'

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Mar 9: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a complete shutdown on Saturday, March 12, against the arrest spree and detention of youth and separatist leaders and to draw attention of the international community towards the human rights 'violations' in the Valley.

Geelani maintained that if the detainees were not immediately released the Government will be responsible for any disturbance of the situation.

In a statement, Geelani accused the State Government of using oppressive tactics against Kashmiris on New Delhi's directions to suppress the ongoing movement.

"It seems New Delhi, according to a conspiracy, is bent upon to repeat 2010 like situation in Kashmir and create disturbance among Kashmiris and damage the tourism sector, the backbone of Kashmir's economy. New Delhi does not want that Kashmiris should live in peace, happiness and achieve prosperity. The main objective of New Delhi is to weaken the aspirations and sentiments of Kashmiris for the ongoing movement for the right to self-determination," he said.

"The political leaders are languishing in jails without any justification. Ironically after quashing of one Public Safety Act another is slapped against them. The oppressive tactics have made the lives of common people particularly youth a hell. They are arrested and booked on frivolous charges and this has forced many teenagers and youth to migrate to other places," Geelani said.

Geelani said due to continuous detention, the health condition of many separatist leaders and youth has been affected. "The detainees including leaders, youth and women have been denied even basic medicare by the jail authorities which can prove dangerous for their life. We can't act as mute spectator to the sufferings of the Kashmiris including detainees. Hartal is the best way for conscious and responsible society to show resentment towards the plight of detainees. If the detainees are not immediately released the Government will be responsible for any disturbance of the situation," he said.

Geelani urged the people to observe a complete shutdown on March 12 and urged the international human rights organizations- Amnesty International and Red Cross- to take note of the rights 'violations.'
