India-Cuba Ties Turn 50

11 de febrero de 2010, 12:23New Delhi, Feb 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuba-India friendship has risen above time and distance, Indian State Minister for Foreign Relations Preneet Kaur said on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.   The official was the main speaker of the ceremony organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs and the Cuban embassy in New Delhi to mark the historic event. Kaur referred to the first contact in New York between historic leaders Jawaharlal Nehru and Fidel Castro, in 1960, as the beginning of a lasting friendship. After that meeting, the two countries began cooperating in the fight against colonialism, for a new world economic order and above all, for strengthening the Non-aligned Movement, she noted. Meanwhile, Cuban ambassador to India Miguel A. Ramirez reminded of the main events in the history of bilateral ties, since the visit Commander Ernesto Che Guevara paid to the Asian country in July, 1959, only six months after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. The two countries advocate everlasting friendship, despite distance and current changing circumstances in the world, Ramirez said. Cuba-India bilateral links go far beyond agreement in opinions and stances as to multilateral affairs, and include cooperation in areas such as biotechnology, sports, technology and energy, they said. iom/dig/nm
