When a person passes away, a piece of memory of history also goes away forever, as each person has their own set of experiences, memories and reactions to those experiences, as well as an understanding about the events that occured in their lifetime.

We may tend to think that there is a big mass of collective memory out there, especially in this age of information overload, that has captured and thus prevents individual memories from fading away. Unfortunately, this is not so.

With reference to India's own Independence and birth as a new nation, sixty-three years ago, there are just a few places (e.g. Jallianwala Bagh Memorial, Amritsar) and institutions (e.g. Mani Bhavan, Mumbai) where memories have been recorded and shared for future generations.

Karmayog would like to invite people to share their personal memories, photographs, articles, letters, books, etc. of pre and post Independence India; of experiences of ordinary life during that period, of interactions and coversations with prominent people from the freedom movement, etc.

We will compile all the memories that we receive and display these on Karmayog as part of a shared remembrance that is passed on from generation to generation.

All such things implicitly shape our individual and collective consciousness, but when they are also presented explicitly, it helps us to understand ourselves better.
