Pramod Mutalik caught on camera for accepting bribe to hold riots

S. O. News Service, Friday, 14 May 2010 - 01:47:28 IST

Bangalore: "Moral Police, Immoral Acts, The dark side of Muthalik, Dirty deals decide the agenda of moral police, Mutalik and his sena of goons agree to rent a riot for cash, Shri Ramsene leaders organize riots from the prison cell, Ram sene plan riots with clinical precision, Mutalik and his deputees brag about pub attack, HT tehelka exposed the dirty underbelly of saffron vandalism". These are the sentences that were being flashed on the Headlines Today channel after HT Tehelka exposed the Shri Ram Sena in a sting operation.

The Chief of Shri Ram Sena Pramod Muthalik was caught on camera for accepting bribe to hold riots. Pushp Sharma approached Pramod Mutalik and other leaders of the Sena posing as an artist wanting quick publicity. Mutalik agreed to vandalise three art exhibitions in Karnataka and allegedly charged Rs. 60 lakhs for the act. He claimed that he could hold riots in Muslim dominated areas in Bangalore and Mangalore. He also stated that he has an image and he cannot be directly involved in all this.

According to the TV report, Pushp Sharma approached Vasanth Kumar Bhavani, the president of the sena in Bangalore who is an accused for working for the underworld don Ravi Poojary. He is known as the public relation man of the sena and he is the one who decides the nuts and the bolts of every action. He is also held for a number of extortion cases in Coastal Karnataka.

Bhavani was about to decide the time and the place for the riots. He would also decide about who would be the chief guest of the occasion, in which they would initiate their riots. He says that he can involve underworld don Ravi Poojary in the heinous act. When Pushp assured him that they will not lodge any police complaint, Bhavani affirmed that the riots should look authentic; therefore a police case should be registered.

Pushp Sharma got in contact with Jitesh Kumar, state Co Convener of the Sena. He was previously associated with the RSS. He has been charged for murdering a moulvi and also for attacking four churches and many priests. He has attended an arms training camp.

When Pushp asked him about his involvement in Hindu Muslim riots, Jitesh positively nodded and told that the riots was arranged in Kasargod. He admitted on camera that he bludgeoned a moulvi with a sword and took his body away. He assured damage to Muslims in the riot which was supposed to be organized. He also maintained that weekends are the best time to create riots. He directed Pushp to contact Prasad Attavar and said that he would charge more than Rs. 70 lakhs for the riots. He further notified that half the money would be spent on bribing the police.

During the meeting with the sena chief, Pramod Mutalik had also given the number of Prasad Attavar in Mangalore, who could be contacted for arranging the riots. Prasad Attavar was previously in Bangalore jail, but was later shifted to the high security jail in Bellary. Prasad Attavar avowed 'More the cash, bloodier the riot'. He asserted that the riots will be fully covered by the national media and it will be worse than the pub attacks which were organized sometime back in Mangalore.

This is the way in which the self styled custodians worked. It is said that these men who specialize in riots were about to finalize a deal to vandalize an exhibition for Rs. 60 lakhs. They had allegedly planned riots in Bangalore, Mangalore and Mysore. They also outrageously comment that they have organized a number of riots and the police have provided them with necessary support.

The headlines today channel caught up with Pramod Mutalik, who refused all the allegations demanding the visuals to be displayed. After the visuals were aired, the channel greeted a few eminent people to comment on the issue.

H T Sangliana, former police commissioner asserted 'it is a shame that this is happening under the eyes of the police', while Prashanth Bhushan, civil liberties lawyer stated 'the organization must be banned as it was known for battering, molesting girls and even rioting earlier. You can arrest him on the basis of the videos'.

While countering this argument, Pramod Mutalik stated "I have not organized any riot for money, I have been framed and I have not done anything wrong. If I am wrong I will accept the decision of the court, even if it orders to hang me till death. It's the duty of the police to investigate, but the people who organized the sting operation cannot instigate this, you should arrest Pushp Sharma for trapping me."

Prashanth Bhushan further commented that planning a riot itself is a very heinous crime under criminal procedure code. Demanding money to plan a riot is an offence irrespective of it being executed or no. B P Singhal, A retired IPS officer, former BJP Rajya Sabha MP and a Hindutva defender, who had earlier commented that the pub culture was against the Indian culture averred that police can act only if a case is registered against them.

Pramod Mutalik then cited that he did not talk anything about riots; rather he only spoke about the exhibition. He further said that it's been five years since the sena has evolved and it does not have any criminal record. While stating that he is been trapped in a well planned conspiracy, he said "I haven't organized any riot for money, you can lodge a case against Shri Ram Sene and I will lodge a deformation case against you" he added.

Ajai Kumar Singh, DGP, Karnataka notified that they are accused in several cases and legal action will be taken if a case is registered against them. He also alleged that the BJP government is giving political patronage to these goons.

Cash-for-riots: Muthalik `stung' by TV channel

May 14th, 2010

May 13: A private television channel has claimed it "unmasked the real face of Pramod Muthalik" who heads Karnataka's moral brigade Sri Ram Sene, when it ran a sting operation that recorded the right-wing activist agreeing to `rent a riot'.

Muthalik shot to fame after the infamous attack on the Mangalore pub last year when several young women were assaulted as they were leaving a pub, for alleged "indecent behaviour."

In a six-week long joint investigation by Headlines Today-Tehelka, Muthalik was caught on camera accepting money from an undercover reporter who posed as an artist. After handing over a token contribution of Rs 10,000 "for his contribution to the cause of Hindutva," the reporter discussed a proposal with Muthalik that would make him as famous as the iconic M.F. Husain. The joint investigation exposes how Muthalik and his chief aides were willing to incite a riot for money.

More damaging is the footage of Muthalik's jailed associates freely meeting the undercover reporter in jail, and the implication that police were amenable to Muthalik's plans.

While senior police officials said they would investigate the allegations before responding, Mr Muthalik strongly denied this and said he had been quoted out of context.

"Two reporters met me and talked about the activities of our organisation. We never discussed this. A deep-rooted conspiracy is being hatched perhaps by the Congress to defame me. I am facing 70 cases and in 50, I have been exonerated. If they have proof, let the channel authorities file a case. I think, with this, they (Congress) want to target the local BJP government too," Mr Mutalik told Deccan Chronicle.

He took objection to the channels calling him "a goonda". "I am in public life for the last 35 years. Not even one such case of taking money or asking money for engineering riot between Hindus and Muslims was registered against me. We do not indulge in this," Mr Mutalik said.
