ACTION ALERT:
Call on California State Senators to Oppose Bill Supporting Israel's Deadly Attack on Freedom Flotilla

(Los Angeles - 7/1/10) -- The Muslim Public Affairs Council recently learned that California State Senator Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks), has introduced legislation calling on the support of the California legislature to support Israel's deadly attack on a convoy of humanitarian aid ships in international waters.

A press release from Strickland's office reads in part: "SCR 117 declares California's support of Israel's actions defending a blockade of the Gaza Strip on May 31, 2010. SCR 117 also affirms California's support of Israel's authority to protect and defend itself." Stricktland is quoted in the release saying that Israel was "peacefully" enforcing a blockade on Gaza, while the Flotilla sought to "provoke" Israel. However, the facts speak for themselves. Nine peace activists bringing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza lost their lives because they were fired on by Israeli armed forces, and more than 700 other members of the convoy were later detained by Israeli forces.

Senator Strickland's language twists the truth. Groups like Amnesty International have called the Flotilla incident an excessive use of force and are calling on constituents to contact elected officials to remove the blockade on Gaza because of its inhumanity.

MPAC recently held two community forums called "Set the Truth Free: The Freedom Flotilla & the Future of Palestine" in Washington, DC and Anaheim, CA featuring Ambassador Ed Peck's eyewitness testimony as a member of the flotilla. (Click here to watch video from the CA event.)

As Peck said, "Too many of us have been too quiet for too long. We must participate, explain, talk to people and educate people. It is not going to be easy, safe nor quick, but it will be worth the effort."

TAKE ACTION:
  • SCR 117 is in the Senate Rules Committee for assignment. Call members
of the Rules Committee today. The bill must be stopped from making it past the committee.
  • If you live in California, call your State Senator to voice your disagreement with this bill. Click here to find your senator.  Demand his/her staunch opposition to SCR 117 using the talking points provided below.
SUGGESTED TALKING POINTS:
  • I support bills and initiatives that uphold American values of justice and freedom.
  • I urge the Senator to strongly oppose SCR 117. It is a gross mischaracterization of the reality of Israel's aggression in international waters.
  • Israeli actions are directly harming America's image and interests internationally and jeopardizing American lives.
  • The California State Senate should call for an independent international investigation into what took place when Israeli commandoes killed nine civilians -- including one American citizen -- on May 31, 2010.
  • The passengers of the Freedom Flotilla were unarmed civilians escorting 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid and building supplies to the 1.5 million people of Gaza who are living through one of the worst humanitarian crises in decades as a result of the ongoing illegal blockade.
