At the time of writing at 4 am, Baba Ramdev has already been forcefully removed from Ramlila Maidan by the Police while he and his followers were sleeping around 3 am and the movement disrupted. Baba has reportedly been dropped off at Delhi border and allowed to make his way wherever he can. The rest of the people will doubtless be shunted off now and the whole show over.
While public sentiment will definitely be high as news percolates – only TV has given out the news so far, the papers will not get it till 6th June – some pertinent issues arise which call for cool thinking on all our parts.
1] Recall Bofors – the first major public scandal of modern times. I was a reporter, and I recall that the entire public galvanization over the issue was POLITICAL, and that ALL political parties called the people for rallies, speeches etc in Delhi . Because it WAS a Political fight, and no one hid behind anything else.
2] So why did the BJP and the RSS [and they are definitely behind this ill-conceived move] allow Baba Ramdev, who has no skills of his own, to organise such a large gathering in Delhi ? And why did they not anticipate this would happen?
There are many things that come to mind now, that demand an answer, and not Emotions ---
1] WHY did Advani and Co sneakily gang up with Govt and pass the Budget just recently in April, the day before Parliament was to break for the recess in which the Budget would be studied and objections worked out, before being passed a one month later, in May? Why did BJP not bring down the Govt on a cut motion, or at least get some concessions for the middle class?
There has never been an answer to this, but it is pertinent when I asked, and it is pertinent now even more. What are the wheeling dealings going on – will BJP kindly answer?
2] WHY did RSS MINDLESSLY give its entire cadre strength, middle level leaders, etc for the bogus movement of Anna Hazare? This too cannot be evaded.
3] When RSS-BJP realised that they were totally used and thrown, they retaliated with the Baba popularity card, and the galvanization was stupendous. But the man was not up to the task, and it was obvious last evening itself, that Govt was up to no good.
Possibly SONIA GANDHI had put her foot down when agreement was near, and said to throw him out or my NAC gets lesser stature, and that is why Kapil Sibal indicated that Govt would end this with a show of strength. If so, I personally believe we must now cut ALL non-political busybodies out of governance issues, beginning with the NAC.
4] But, having put up Ramdev, why did the fat Manchurian President of BJP call some executive meeting and take all stalwarts AWAY from Delhi to a meeting where nothing was going to happen that could not wait? This deserves an answer. Why was there no one to help the Baba from RSS cadres, or have they gone soft with good living?
5] Why did RSS let Sadhvi Rithambara attend the meeting and give everyone else an excuse to distance from the NON-political movement of Baba? This question calls for an answer. First, Rithambara is not very bright and has nothing pertinent to say; she could have stayed where she was. She came to give the movement the RSS-tag, for no good reason, when a more open and honest participation by the organisation at a senior leadership level could have been better. Why this sad show? Who was testing the ground and for what purpose – RSS must answer this.
6] Finally – back to the beginning – why was this NOT an out and out BJP show?
Now BJP will make some fake noises – there is NO Parliament and no way to bring down the Govt after SELLING OUT in the Budget in April – and what will it all amount to? Nothing. I always had misgivings about this show, because it was just a horrible way of misleading people, bringing them out in the open, exposing them to violence and meaningless pratter, while all the POLITICIANS stayed in 5-star hotels or at home. Very Gandhian, in fact.
Shame. This is what the BJP top – squabbling – leadership did at the Tiranga Yatra in January also. Pretended to be keen to hoist the flag – did an exercise to fool the people, and then quietly went home after mutually stabbing each other in the back.
This is not what an Opposition party is supposed to do, and they should have the guts to face the people and give answers to these questions. And at the very least, they must now PLEGDE that they will not pass any Legislation with a Sonia Gandhi hand. By the way – will Advani be so good as to tell us WHY – even before the Anna Hazare stage-managed talks with Govt could begin on the dubious Lokpal Bill – WHY he pledged that BJP will pass the legislation [which was not even drafted, and had NO BJP representation]?
The mindless and shameless behaviour of this one man demands an answer. I feel strongly that the Top TEN BJP leaders should step down immediately before they take the country to further ruin. Or they should just shut up the party and go home, and let people work out a new opposition for themselves.
