Obama creates indefinite detention system for prisoners at Guantanamo Bay 08 Mar 2011 President Obama signed an executive order Monday that will create a formal system of indefinite detention for those held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who 'continue to pose a significant threat to national security.' The administration also said it will start new military tribunal trials for detainees prisoners there. The executive order recognizes the reality that some Guantanamo Bay prisoners will remain in U.S. custody for many years, if not for life.

Obama abandons key pledge by restarting Guantanamo trials 09 Mar 2011 Any last vestiges of doubt that President Barack Obama had abandoned entirely on his election pledge to close down Guantanamo Bay evaporated last night as he gave the green light for military trials there to resume and laid down the rules for holding some of the detainees inside the camp indefinitely. In the wake of a long Pentagon review on how the tribunals should be conducted, Defence Secretary Robert Gates will now be expected to lift a ban on new [kangaroo] trials at Guantanamo that has been in place since early 2009 when Mr Obama came to office promising to shut the infamous facility within 12 months.

Republicans push for tougher Guantánamo limits 08 Mar 2011 House Republicans on Tuesday demanded tougher restrictions for terror suspects at Guantánamo even after President Barack Obama reversed course and ordered the resumption of military trials for detainees prisoners. Annoyed that Obama acted by executive authority - and without congressional input, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., and six other GOP lawmakers said Tuesday they would introduce legislation to limit legal representation for detainees and permanently block money to build or renovate a facility in the United States to house suspects now held at the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

David Cameron and Barack Obama plan 'full spectrum' of action on Libya 08 Mar 2011 David Cameron and President Barack Obama have announced a "full spectrum" of action on Libya as Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces pounded two oil towns in an effort to bring the rebellion against the regime under control. A joint British and US statement said a plan for a no-fly zone, as requested by many of the rebels, was among the ideas being discussed. Action would also include surveillance and enforcement of the arms embargo against Libya.

We will not let Gaddafi murder his people, says Cameron [Right, only the Queen's UK and the US are allowed to do that.] 08 Mar 2011 Britain will not stand by and allow Colonel Gaddafi to slaughter his people, David Cameron pledged last night. The Prime Minister joined forces with Barack Obama to approve a 'full spectrum' of military responses as the Libyan leader sent troops and tanks to retake Zawiyah. Opposition forces were hit with artillery shells, tank rounds and bullets, which also claimed the lives of women and children.

Britain unable to patrol no-fly zone over Libya as we have not got enough planes, warn experts 09 Mar 2011 Britain would not be able to patrol a no-fly zone over Libya without switching resources from Afghanistan, military experts warned yesterday. A leading defence think-tank said it was difficult to see how the UK could contribute enough aircraft to stop Gaddafi attacking rebel forces and civilians from the air without hampering the fight against the Taliban. The comments by analysts at the respected International Institute for Strategic Studies were certain to prove embarrassing for David Cameron, who has called for an international no-fly zone to ground the Libyan air force.

Libya No-Fly Zone Cannot Be US-Led - Clinton 09 Mar 2011 US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has told Sky News that any no-fly zone over Libya must have international backing and not be a Washington-led effort. In an interview at the State Department, Mrs Clinton said: "I think it's very important that this not be a US-led effort, because this comes from the people of Libya themselves. This doesn't come from the outside. This doesn't come from some Western power or some Gulf country saying this is what you should do, this is how you should live."

Libya oil tanks seen as 'time bomb' 09 Mar 2011 The oil producing town of Ras Lanuf in Libya has seen some of the worst fighting in the last few days. Home to a huge facility at the very heart of Libya's massive oil and gas industry, the plant could become a new target. For now, opposition forces control this and virtually every other natural energy facility in the country. But as this conflict wears on, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi will need oil. He will have to try and take it by force or, as many fear, he could bomb oil and gas complexes to prevent anyone else from using them. [As long as Exxon Mobil or BP can't get them.]

'US seeks to derail popular revolutions' 09 Mar 2011 Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the US and certain Western countries are making efforts to derail popular revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa. "We should be alert about [efforts] by the United States to take advantage of these uprisings," said Salehi in an address to the Assembly of Experts on Tuesday. He added that the popular aspirations for Islam and justice, combined with oppression by leaders of the US and its allies, were among main factors leading to the ongoing uprisings in Muslim countries, IRNA reported.

US probes hacker threat over WikiLeaks soldier 08 Mar 2011 The Pentagon said Tuesday it had requested an investigation into a hacker group's reported cyber threat against a military base that is being used to hold a US soldier suspected of giving documents to WikiLeaks. Pentagon spokesman Colonel David Lapan said the probe was requested after news that the hacker group called Anonymous was seeking to disrupt online activities at the Quantico, Virginia, base where Private Bradley Manning is incarcerated.

US probes Anonymous plans for attack on Marines 08 Mar 2011 US law enforcement authorities are investigating plans by members of the hacking collective Anonymous to disrupt activities at the Marine Corps base in Quantico to protest against the alleged rough treatment torture given suspected WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning... Recently, Anonymous members appear to have broadened their targets by suggesting attacks on the US military.

Anger at Manning's 'naked punishment' 07 Mar 2011 The young American soldier who has been charged with leaking confidential cables to the WikiLeaks website is being forced to sleep naked in his cell and stand outside each morning to be handed back his clothes because he made a single sarcastic quip, his lawyer has claimed. Fresh outrage at the conditions faced by Bradley Manning, a former research analyst in the Army, at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia erupted last week. "Is this Quantico or Abu Ghraib?" Democrat congressman Dennis Kucinich, demanded. At the time, the Army would say only that the order was "non-punitive".

Death penalty still on table for WikiLeaks suspect 03 Mar 2011 The death penalty is still possible for the Army private suspected of giving classified material to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks despite prosecutors' promise not to recommend it, military law experts said Thursday. Military District of Washington commander Maj. Gen. Karl R. Horst could ignore the prosecutors' recommendation and refer for trial as a capital offense the charge that Pfc. Bradley Manning aided the enemy, the experts said. In that event, a court-martial jury of at least 12 members could vote for execution if Manning were convicted.

Afghanistan lets Blackwater stay despite shakeup of security contractors  --Hamid Karzai forced to back down over expulsion of mercenary companies, with many likely to remain in country 07 Mar 2011 Blackwater looks set to survive an Afghan government clampdown on mercenaries after Hamid Karzai was forced by his western partners to abandon a complete disbandment of private security companies. Under plans to be announced by the Afghan government this month many security contractors, whom Karzai regards as being little better than militias, will be allowed to continue operating for another year.

In northern Iraq, a professor at the University of Mosul was shot dead by gunmen [Blackwater?] in front of his house in the east of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

US group fights ban on Israel 'war crime' bus ads 08 Mar 2011 A US lobby group is taking legal action to challenge a local authority's refusal to let it put posters on Seattle buses criticizing Israel's "war crimes" in Gaza. The Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign (SMAC) vowed to pursue a lawsuit, despite a judge's refusal to force officials who run the bus system in Seattle and surrounding suburbs to allow the posters to be displayed. In December, the group paid King County authorities nearly $1,800 to put ads on the sides of 12 Seattle-area metro buses reading: "Israeli War Crimes: Your Tax Dollars at Work," with a picture of a bombed out Gaza wall.

About 150 Yemeni army personnel joined protesters on Tuesday.

2,000 Yemeni inmates join uprising 08 Mar 2011 Nearly 2,000 Yemeni inmates have revolted at a prison in the capital, taken a dozen guards hostage and called on President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down. The unrest broke out in the Sana'a prison late on Monday when prisoners set their mattresses ablaze and occupied the facility's courtyard, AP quoted a security official said on Tuesday. He said the guards fired tear gas and gunshots into the air but were not able to force the prisoners to surrender.

Army, CIA, Canadians to train at Fort Leavenworth 08 Mar 2011 Army officials are preparing to conduct what they say is a rare training event involving the U.S. military, the CIA, Canadian officers and other government agencies. The Joint Intermediate Staff Planning Exercise will be held March 21-25 at Fort Leavenworth's Lewis and Clark Center, home of the Army Command and General Staff College. The weeklong event is designed to encourage participants to confront the challenges and uncertainties of joint, interagency and multinational operations.

3 Lawmakers Join Campaign to Protect Anti-Terror Tipsters From Discrimination Suits 08 Mar 2011 Three U.S. lawmakers from both sides of the aisle on Tuesday joined a growing campaign to expand protections for Americans who tip off law enforcement to potential terrorist threats from discrimination lawsuits if they identify the wrong person. Sens. Joseph Lieberman, I-Insane-Conn., chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee,  Susan Collins, R-Maine, the Republican on the committee, and Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, unveiled Tuesday the "See Something, Say Something Act."

U.S. hearings on homegrown Muslim terror raise fears of witch hunt 08 Mar 2011 A U.S. Republican lawmaker's decision to hold high-profile congressional hearings this week on the "extent of radicalization in the American Muslim community" has stirred charges of McCarthyism and comparisons with the treatment of Japanese-Americans in the Second World War. Rep. Peter King, the head of the House homeland security committee, says he'll go ahead with the hearings because the threat posed by homegrown Muslim terrorists "is too important to ignore in the name of political correctness."

Idaho passes Republican bill to curb union rights 09 Mar 2011 The Idaho state legislature approved a bill on Tuesday to strip public school teachers of many of their collective bargaining rights while protesters in six states rallied against Republican efforts to curb union power. The Idaho bill, which excludes issues like class size and workloads from negotiations for the state's 12,000 unionized teachers, was given final approval by the Republican-led House and is expected to be signed by Republican Governor [wolf-killing sociopath] Butch Otter. The bill also eliminates teacher tenure, limits the duration of teacher labor contracts to one year and removes seniority as a factor in determining the order of layoffs.

Michigan workers jam Capitol to protest union plan 08 Mar 2011 In a scene reminiscent of Wisconsin, hundreds of pro-union protesters jammed the Michigan state Capitol on Tuesday to oppose a bill that would give emergency managers authority to break labor deals to revive failing schools and cities. About 1,000 pro-union demonstrators gathered on the Capitol steps in Lansing, Michigan, then 400 entered the building to occupy the rotunda and floors overlooking as the Republican state Senate moved the bill toward a final vote expected Wednesday.

E-mails reveal possible Walker concessions on union bill 08 Mar 2011 Gov. Scott Walker's office released documents Tuesday showing he's willing to give on some points of his union bargaining bill to break the Capitol standoff and bring Senate Democrats back from Illinois. The e-mails showed ideas and counteroffers - panned Tuesday by state labor leaders and some Democrats - that were made by the Republican governor's aides and two Democrats as they sought some resolution that would allow Democrats to come back to Wisconsin. The e-mails were first released to the Journal Sentinel through an open-records request and then to other news outlets.

NPR exec calls tea party members racist, xenophobic in secretly recorded video 08 Mar 2011 The former head of NPR's fundraising arm says in a surreptitiously recorded video by a conservative activist that members of the tea party movement are xenophobic and racist and that NPR would prefer to do without subsidies provided by the federal government. In the video, released Tuesday morning by conservative filmmaker Breitbart troll James O'Keefe, NPR executive Ron Schiller disparages conservatives in general and tea party members in particular, saying some of its followers are part of an "anti-intellectual" movement. [The squirrely little maggot finally got one w.out getting convicted of a felony!]

Marshal, gunman die in St. Louis shootout 09 Mar 2011 A deputy U.S. Marshal serving a warrant was shot and killed, two other officers were wounded and the suspect [Carlos Boles] was also killed in a gunfight on Tuesday at a home in St. Louis, officials said. The marshal, identified as John Perry, a 10-year veteran of the force, died at about 7 p.m. in a St. Louis hospital after a daylong battle for his life, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement. The two other wounded officers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries suffered during the incident in the residential south side neighborhood.

Update from Matt and Maggi Support Committee 07 Mar 2011 The Matt and Maggi Support Committee is excited to announce that the perjury charges against two of our favorite Olympia activists have been dropped. Matt Duran and Margaret Belknap were arrested at a protest against police violence that took place last April in Olympia. They were rounded up with 27 other people (The State Street 29) in a mass arrest... While they didn't say it outright, it's clear that the prosecutor's decision to drop the charges was based on their inability to intimidate our friends, the embarrassing lack of evidence, the public awareness of this politically-motivated case, and the defense lawyers who schooled them.

Lawyers: U.S. faces suit on syphilis experiments in Guatemala 09 Mar 2011 The U.S. government will be hit with a class action lawsuit on behalf of 700 Guatemalans who were infected with syphilis unless it offers a way to settle claims before Friday, the plaintiffs' attorneys said. Law firms representing the victims said the United States intentionally infected the Guatemalans between 1946 and 1948 in an effort to study the effects of the disease. The complaint compares it to the Tuskegee syphilis experiment in Alabama. [Oops! USociopaths caught fifty years later infecting people with deadly diseases again! When the final misery and death toll is compiled, history will show that the US has murdered more people and did more environmental damage than any regime in history. --LRP]

Chevron Wins Halt to $18 Billion Judgment in Ecuador Pollution Case 07 Mar 2011 In a New York courtroom today, oil giant Chevron Corp. won a halt to enforcement of an $18 billion judgment for oil pollution of the Ecuadorian Amazon imposed by a court in Ecuador. Granting Chevron's request for a preliminary injunction, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled in Manhattan that Chevron faced "imminent" and "irreparable" harm to its reputation and business relationships.

U.S. targeted EU on GM foods: WikiLeaks --'Calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU.' 08 Mar 2011 Senior U.S. officials in Paris advised the George Bush regime to launch a military-style trade war against the European Union for resisting genetically modified foods, according to newly released WikiLeaks cables. The then U.S. ambassador to France, Craig Stapleton, asked the government to penalize the EU and particularly countries that banned the use of genetically modified (GM) crops. The move came in response to a 2007 French ban on a GM corn variety made by U.S.-based company terrorist group Monsanto. "Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU since this is a collective responsibility, but that also focuses in part on the worst culprits," wrote Stapleton in a December 2007 cable.

Previous lead stories: White House Says Tribunals Can Resume at Guantánamo --Obama Allows Unlimited Detention Without Charge 07 Mar 2011 In a setback to hopes for a quick closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison, the Obama administration on Monday lifted a stay on filing new charges in military tribunals there and set up a process for continuing to hold detainees prisoners who have not been charged. Obama also issued an executive order on Monday establishing a process to continue to hold some Guantanamo prisoners who have been neither charged, convicted nor designated for transfer but who are deemed to pose a threat to security.

America's secret plan to arm Libya's rebels [for oil] --Obama asks Saudis to airlift weapons into Benghazi 07 Mar 2011 Desperate to avoid US military involvement in Libya in the event of a prolonged struggle between the Gaddafi regime and its opponents, the Americans have asked Saudi Arabia if it can supply weapons to the rebels in Benghazi. The Saudi Kingdom, already facing a "day of rage" from its 10 per cent Shia Muslim community on Friday, with a ban on all demonstrations, has so far failed to respond to Washington's highly classified request, although King Abdullah personally loathes the Libyan leader, who tried to assassinate him just over a year ago.

Congressman compares Bradley Manning detention to Abu Ghraib --Rep. cited Army Field Manual 04 Mar 2011 Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) charged today that the military's treatment of Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of leaking confidential materials to Wikileaks, is comparable to the abuse carried out at [US-run] Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Manning was forced Wednesday night to sleep naked in his cell at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., the Marines confirmed Friday. "Is this Quantico or Abu Ghraib?" Kucinich said in a statement today. "Officials have confirmed the 'non-punitive' stripping of an American soldier who has not been found guilty of any crime. This 'non-punitive' action would be considered a violation of the Army Field Manual if used in an interrogation overseas."
