The Winds of Change…
By Tahira Ansari

As seventy-five mile an hour winds and rain swept across Washington D.C. knocking down trees and anything that got in its way, it was easy to see that these were not the only winds that were changing the landscape. Meanwhile in Madison, Wisconsin voters and democratic state representatives banded together to protest the political landscape. Republican Governor Scott Walker had just proposed a bill that he presented as budget cuts that were necessary in response to hard economic times. But workers quickly saw through his rhetoric and discovered that in fact he was trying to take away government employees right to use collective bargaining on issues that affect their wages, health care and pensions. In support of the workers, the democratic state representatives, who are outnumbered by the Republican majority, quickly jumped on the band wagon, and physically left the state because they knew that legally there could not be a vote on the issue until they returned.

Iranian President: Western-made weapons killing people in Arab countries

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that the dictators in the Arab world are targeting their own people with weapons made by the U.S. and its European allies.

"Today, the dictators in the region are killing their people with the weapons they have purchased from the U.S. and its allies," Ahmadinejad stated on Monday.

"The dictators who are killing their people, do not have the capability to make a simple device and are using the weapons they have purchased from the U.S. and its allies to kill their people… the U.S. government and its allies must be held accountable for imposing dictatorship on the people of these countries over the past 30 to 40 years."

Yemen's president has turned his ire to Israel and the US, accusing them of destabilising his country and the Arab world as protesters demanding his ouster press ahead with demonstrations.

Ali Abdullah Saleh's comments on Tuesday marked his harshest public criticism yet of the US, a key ally with which his government is battling al-Qaeda pockets in the Arab Pensinsula.

He said "there's an operations room in Tel Aviv [Israeli capital] with the aim of destabilising the Arab world" and that it is "run by the White House".

There were was no immediate reaction to Saleh's comments from Washington.

An hour after Saleh's speech, tens of thousands of protesters marched to the capital's university, joined for the first time by opposition parties.

Sheik Abdul-Majid al-Zindani, considered by the US to be linked to the al-Qaeda terror network, was present at the gathering.

Saudi Arabia is sending some 30 tanks to Bahrain which were sighted late Monday along the King Fahd causeway linking the two countries, witnesses say.

Pro-democracy protests in Bahrain have shown no sign of decline after almost two weeks. The protesters are demanding the resignation of the government, constitutional reforms and the king's abdication.

Witnesses said that the causeway was blocked as "15 tank carriers carrying two tanks each were heading towards Bahrain," Egypt's al-Masry al-Youm daily reported in its latest edition.

Conference Examining Whereabouts of Imam Musa Sadr
Islam Times reports that a conference examining the whereabouts of Imam Musa Sadr, the founder of the Amal Movement in Lebanon and a resistance fighter against Israel, will be held today in the afternoon.

The purpose of this conference is to gather the latest information about the whereabouts of Imam Musa Sadr and compare them. Sayyid Sadr al-Din Sadr, Imam Musa Sadr's son, announced that his father and his father's companions are still alive and being held in Libyan prisons.

Imam Musa Sadr entered Libya on the 5th of August, 1978 along with Shaykh Muhammad Ya'qub and 'Abbas Badr al-Din. He was supposed to have a meeting with Qaddafi on the 29th or 30th of the month. But, they disappeared the following day. Libyan officials claim that Gaddafi cancelled the meeting.

Tripoli claims that he left Libya on an airplane headed for Italy. But the Italian government rejects the notion that he entered their country. The Shia of Lebanon believe that Libya kidnapped him for political reasons. Some reports state that Libya transferred Imam Musa Sadr outside of Libya during the heat of the current protests.

Last Modified: 01 Mar 2011 11:44 GMT

Government opponents in the Libyan city of Az Zawiyah have repulsed an attempt by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi to retake the city closest to the capital, Tripoli, in six hours of fighting overnight, witnesses say.

Tursday's claims follow reports that government forces attacked the city from the west and the east, and that fighter jets bombed an ammunition depot in the eastern city of Ajdabiya.

There was no word on casualties in Az Zawiyah, which is 50km west of  Tripoli.

"We will not give up Az Zawiyah at any price,'' one witness said on Tuesday.

"We know it is significant strategically. They will fight to get it, but we will not give up. We managed to defeat them because our spirits are high and their spirits are zero."

The rebels, who include army forces who defected from the government, are armed with tanks, machine guns and anti-aircraft guns.

They fought back pro-Gaddafi troops using the same weapons who attacked from six directions.
