NEW DELHI: Some 22,000 policemen were patrolling the city's streets on New Year's Eve. But the police's claims of having turned the city into a virtual fortress on December 31 were brought into serious question after a 17-year-old girl was found brutally murdered on Saturday evening in southwest Delhi.

The girl, an orphan, lived with her elder brother in the servant quarters of
Lady Hardinge Hospital. Her half-naked body was discovered by a passerby around 4pm in an empty DDA plot in Dwarka between the Sector 13 and 14 metro stations. Apparently strangled with her pair of jeans, she was found with her head and face disfigured and bloodied rocks next to her body.

Senior police officers said it was too early to say whether the girl was raped or had consensual sex. But sources in
Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where the postmortem was conducted, claimed they had found that she had been raped by at least two persons. They said she was also possibly sodomised, though this could not be confirmed till late Sunday night.

"The cause of death is by smothering and strangulation. She was dragged after that, resulting in other injuries on her face. There are also injuries with a blunt instrument on her head and marks on her body that indicate a struggle," said a source in the hospital. The girl was found with the right portion of her face and shoulder damaged.

Cops claimed her face was possibly disfigured to hide her identity and prevent early detection. "It appears to be a crime of passion as there did not seem to be any pre-planning in how the crime was committed. She was killed using available murder weapons nearby — her trousers and stones. We suspect that it was a known person as she had left of her own accord earlier," said a senior police officer.
